Nibu, 25 Lonsdale Street, Braddon
$429,900-$479,900
Developer Nik Bulum says, “Nibu itself means ‘golden luxury’,” a theme which he and architect Nathan Gibson Judd have channelled throughout the design.
The shape and form of the pyramids is reflected in the exterior architecture, which Bulum says was intended to push the boundaries of the traditional apartment form away from that of a big box.
Rather, he says, “we wanted a building like [Gaudi’s] in Canberra that people would come and see and take photographs”.
Gibson Judd says the design focused on light and air, with modern glass-scapes reaching from floor to ceiling, creating elements of transparency. Privacy is maintained through the geometric, sculptural facade, which has been perforated so at night the building will glow like a lantern.
With space for cafes, restaurants and shops on the ground floor, Nibu sits naturally within the culture of Lonsdale Street.
Just five minutes’ walk from central Canberra, bookended by parkland and filled with a range of quirky cafes, bars, restaurants and shops, Bulum is not exaggerating when he describes Braddon as “the perfect place to live and work”, saying it’s “a cultural village outside of a little city”.
With its inner-city vibe Braddon is unique to Canberra and developments in the area reflect that.
Boasting 26 individually designed apartments, Nibu is a genuinely boutique development.
Gibson Judd says these are “proper designer apartments,” with care taken over design in all spaces within the building.
Finishes are in modern material, such as leather and felt, with anodised gold used frequently as a decorative element to continue the stylistic references to Egypt.
The apartments feature luxurious inclusions and finishes, such as a mix of timber and polished concrete floors, ducted heating and cooling, Miele ovens and induction cooktops, and double-glazed windows. Due to be finished in May next year, nine one-bedroom apartments are still available.
