The best markets in Adelaide

Street Market Shopping

The best-known is Adelaide Central Market. Established in 1869 when some market gardeners set up a stall to sell their produce, it’s a major tourist attraction trading in fruit, vegetables, small goods and cafe food. It’s under cover and open Tuesday to Saturday except on public holidays.

Organic, artisan and whole foods are available Sundays 9 am–2 pm from The Market Shed on Holland, a fairly new covered market catering to the inner-urban dweller.

For a commercial market that’s also under cover, try Prattys Showgrounds Warehouse Market. It’s open all weekend 10 am–3 pm in the Adelaide Showgrounds Dairy Hall in Wayville and offers antique furniture, secondhand goods and bric-a-brac, but no food.

Fresh food direct from the source

If you’re after fresh, seasonal food direct from the grower, try Adelaide Farmers’ Market next door to Prattys. It’s open on Sundays, with around 100 stalls selling edibles only – arts and crafts are not available here. The outdoor stalls sell mostly fruit, vegetables, herbs and plants (including heirloom varieties) and there’s a large area under cover selling ready-to-eat foods.

Just 45 minutes south of Adelaide is the fabulous Willunga Farmers Market. Held in the Willunga Town Square every Saturday from 8 am to 12.30 pm, it started over 12 years ago to promote sustainable food production practices in the Fleurieu region and is now considered one of the best.

Another easy drive on the fourth Sunday of each month will get you to the Stirling Market, about 15 kilometres south-east of the city. There you’ll find home-grown fruit, vegetables and produce straight from the farm or backyard.

The quintessential Adelaide market

For shopping, food and live music with a uniquely Adelaide flavour, catch That Dapper Market where the quirky, kitsch and vintage mingle. Peruse the stalls or nibble on vegan delicacies while you listen to music by local indie and folk artists.

We can’t tell you where or when it’ll be on next, just that it’s held every few months on a Saturday afternoon.

Adelaide has a wide variety of markets for the foodies, bargain hunters or perusers among you. If you know of any other good ones in Adelaide, we’d love to hear about them.
