The best markets in Perth

Market City is the institution market, trading wholesale through the week but on Saturday morning the public can buy leftover produce in the Wholesale Clearance Market. There’s also a Community Market every Sunday with over 300 stalls selling new and secondhand goods.

Operating out of its grand old Victorian building since 1902, the Fremantle Market has seafood, fresh fruit and vegetables, food stalls, art and bric-a-brac stands to keep the fossicker happy for hours. Open Friday through Sunday.

For those seeking alternatives to the commercial market, City Farm Organic Growers Market is held every Saturday morning on the site of the iconic Perth City Farm. The farm was founded in 1994 as an exercise in environmental sustainability and community engagement so the markets have a strong community vibe. Enjoy a yoga class, live music and an organic tea or coffee while you shop.

On the fourth Saturday of each month the City Farm Artisan Markets feature handmade produce from natural soaps and cosmetics through to woodwork.

Farmers markets everywhere

Fremantle, Subiaco, Midland, Kalamunda, Stirling for starters; they’re the best way to get freshly harvested, chemical free produce and you’ll be supporting local producers.

Two community markets, Poynter Farmers Market and Subi Farmers Market, offer organic or biodynamic produce, specialist breads and home baking. Poynter Farmers’ Market is on every second Saturday morning at Pointer Primary School, and Subi Farmers Market takes place at Subiaco Primary School every Saturday. These not-for-profit markets give all proceeds back to the schools so you can do your bit for the community while enjoying healthy delights.

Midland Farmers Market has fresh fruit and veg, flowers, plants, specialist stalls and features local artists. It’s on every Sunday from 7am – 3pm, behind the Town Hall clock.

Not your average market

Perth has a few exclusive markets, where stallholders have to apply to be allowed to show their wares. One is Perth Upmarket, where over 150 of WA’s most talented artists, designers, craftsmen and gourmets display their craft. It’s held every three months in the University of Western Australia’s Winthrop Hall.

Market Girl is also held quarterly at Prendiville Catholic College, Ocean Reef and specialises in ‘handmade, unique and boutique’ products from cupcakes to kid’s toys and clothes.
