When it’s time to move out, a deep clean can make all the difference, Simon Cohen reveals.

“In my line of business, you need a keen eye for attention to detail,” the property mogul and leading buyer’s agent says.

“As a renter, I urge you not to overlook these often forgotten areas, as it can be costly – and require the property manager to send another cleaner to deal with it.

“Ensuring a thorough clean of every inch of your home is so important, especially when bidding farewell to a rental property.”

Cohen, who has partnered with Shark Home to celebrate the launch of the Shark HydroVac, a 3-in-1 mop, vacuum and self-cleaning floor gadget, urges renters to ensure the property sparkles from top to bottom.

Cohen reveals the often-neglected areas renters forget to clean before handing back the keys.

Blinds, curtains and window tracks

“Cobwebs and dust tend to accumulate in these spaces that are often forgotten. Use a microfibre cloth, toothbrush or duster to ensure all surfaces are free from dust, then vacuum any excess that falls to the ground,” Cohen says.

Behind the fridge, including baseboards

“It’s one of the most neglected areas, with the skirting or baseboards and cornices also needing a wipe down,” Cohen says. “They can often harbour fridge spills and marks.”

He suggests using a damp cloth to remove, then ensuring no dust or grime is left with a good vacuum.

The oven

“If you’re anxious about your final inspection, pay special attention to the oven and dedicate enough time,” Cohen suggests.

“Whether you choose to clean with baking soda paste or a more serious cleaning product, you will need to leave it for a few hours to work its magic. Don’t get caught short.”

Furnished areas

Cohen advises thinking about the soft furnishings too if you’re leaving a furnished home.

“Like carpets that need deep cleaning when leaving a property, rugs too can harbour hidden dirt and dust. Give them a thorough cleaning before you say goodbye to your rental,” he says.

Outdoor zones

“If you’re lucky enough to have a garden or outdoor space, whether that be a courtyard or balcony, you’re also responsible for ensuring it’s move-in ready,” Cohen stresses.

“This means jet cleaning any outdoor spaces that might be suffering, as well as tending to the greenery.”
