• Do your real estate research – use online tools to gather information, access grants and stay up to date on the rules in your state or territory.
• Understanding mortgages – save a deposit, choose the right home loan and get pre-approval.
• Land title implications ­– evaluate the pros and cons.
• What type of property should I buy? – consider old vs new, freestanding houses vs units or townhouses.
• Get the right legal advice – have a lawyer or conveyancer on board to provide advice on contracts and guide you through the process.
• Making your property purchase – make sure you understand the process (exchange, settlement and completion) and complete each stage correctly.
• Additional home buyer costs – be aware of the fees and taxes that apply in your state and factor them into your budget.
