IKEA is the king of stackable shelving, and most of us have utilised their convenient and cost-effective shelf units as a solution to the lack of storage space. But what about getting creative and building your own? You don’t need to be Tom Williams; you just need a bit of nous and some good ideas.
Folding fabric cubes can be pegged together to create a three-tier bathroom cabinet or underwear ‘drawer’. Target and metromum.com.au have a great range. Mix and match colours but keep the size uniform for a moveable piece that costs less than $40.
For something more sturdy, Way Basics have storage cubes that come in a variety of colours and can be jazzed up with woven or linen cube inserts. Kmart also have a range of cube shelving that’s affordable and easy to put together.
Milk crates make a fantastic storage solution and you can usually find them on street corners. Give them a wash and stack six on their side for a cage that will hold books, DVDs, or bathroom and kitchen goodies. If you’re feeling inspired a lick of paint will streamline the colours with the rest of your decor.
If buying something new isn’t in your budget (or you just want to be more creative), shop around at second-hand stores or keep an eye out on the street during council collection time. Industrial workbenches can easily be turned into shelving by using wicker baskets as drawers, or – if you can get your hands on one – a tin tool box works a treat for storing old toys or for keeping your summer or winter doona tucked away safely until you need it again.
With a bit of creative thinking, you can create a new look for your home while saving yourself the hassle and money of shopping for new shelves. All it takes is being able to think outside the square … or box!
