Here are some of Perth’s best spots where you can legally take your pet for a run without a restraint.

Soft sand running

Dogs and horses are welcome at Whitfords Beach in Joondalup. Located just south of Pinnaroo Point, it has abundant parking, including designated areas for horse floats.

Horses can be exercised on the horse beach from daybreak to midday Monday–Saturday. Dogs have their own beach but can also play off-leash in the horse beach exercise area after midday Monday–Saturday and all day Sunday.

Peasholm Beach in Scarborough has 1.5 km of soft white sand for running along as well as a great swimming beach for you and your pup. There are water bowls and a hose for washing down your furry friend afterwards.

Large swathes of the beaches around Rockingham are also designated leash-free.

Free-range pups

In the northern suburbs, Carine Open Space is a 124-acre park with numerous sporting facilities, including those for cricket, soccer, tennis and baseball; there is also a four-kilometre jogging track with exercise stations. Your dog has huge areas for roaming free and playing with friends; just make sure it stays clear of the wetlands, which are protected. If that proves difficult, sign it up for the dog training offered on-site.

Jorgensen Park in Kalamunda is set on an old golf course adjacent to Kalamunda National Park. There’s plenty of open space for running and chasing balls, together with bushland and many different walking trails.

For a relaxing break from running around, head to Pet Lovers Cafe in Guildford. While you enjoy a coffee or snack, your cat or dog can browse for a special bakery treat, funky accessories or a bark a’latte.

Many other Perth parks allow dogs to run leash-free, but if you’re not entirely sure, check the local council website so you don’t end up with a fine for having fun.

Just remember to always keep your dog away from children’s playgrounds, car parks or sporting fields which are already being used. Carry a lead with you at all times and pick up any ‘doings’ immediately.
