Planning on giving your bedroom a makeover but don’t know what to do with the budget you have? Jacinta Preston, interior designer, says the bedroom is one place in the house where you can make “low-risk design decisions” and where a small budget can go a long way.
Here, Preston shares her tips and shows us what you can do with different budgets.
To get started, Preston recommends you take a big-picture approach to the design of your bedroom. Whether it’s an industrial or a resort theme you’re after, understanding the overall theme or feeling you want to achieve is a good reference for buying materials and making decisions.
“Loosely describe the feeling of your bedroom … have this idea of your theme and it will help you make all your material and design decisions,” Preston says.
Changing the colour of your walls, whether through paint or wallpaper is a budget-friendly way to give your room a makeover.
If you want to skim even more on the wallpaper, turn it into a “feature”.
“It’s easy to do just a feature wall, which keeps the costs down.”
In fact, Preston believes changing the look of your wall also changes the overall feeling of the room.
Customised bed heads and flat-pack wardrobes are the way to go with a $10,000 budget. Preston says you can also use your budget to splash on key accessories such as rugs, ottomans, feature chairs and luxe throws.
These accessories also give you the opportunity to get creative with colours and textures.
With a $20,000 budget for your bedroom renovation, Preston recommends you install a walk-in wardrobe. She says walk-ins are popular with both her male and female clients.
In addition, you can add curtains and custom blinds. “With some luck, these could be hard-wired, which means you can operate them via a remote control,” she says.
For that additional luxe feel, you can “hardwire everything”, including your curtains, stereo system and lights so that all of this can be controlled without leaving your bed.
