The town was gazetted in 1859 with its name coming from a local member of parliament of the time, Sir John Hay (although it was once known as Lang's Crossing Place). It was major river port and depot for Cobb and Co. During WWII, Hay was used as an internment and prisoner of war camp. Hay has a population of less than 3000 and sits on the famous Hay Plain, a treeless and open flat area home to merino wool production and increasing vegetable and fruit growing thanks to irrigation. Neighbouring towns are Balranald, Griffith, Deniliquin and Googowi.
