Origins in the United States RE/MAX, the world’s most successful real estate network, was founded by RE/MAX International chairman Dave Liniger in 1973 in Denver, Colorado. At that time, most salespeople were earning just 50% commission and office owners directly controlled every aspect of a salesperson’s job. Agents were disillusioned and unmotivated. Most left the industry within two years. Liniger, a real estate agent himself, felt there had to be a better way, and decided to start putting his dreams of a fairer real estate system into practice. He drafted an innovative business plan that put people first and enabled both office owners and agents to succeed. He called his master plan RE/MAX, an acronym for real estate maximums. Liniger and his wife Gail, also a real estate agent, hoped to make a difference with their new company and its unique business structure. What they achieved was nothing short of a global revolution. Today, more than 100,000 agents work in RE/MAX, with more than 5,000 offices operating worldwide. Origins in Australia Opening Australian operations in 1997, RE/MAX experienced significant growth as real estate agents discovered the freedom, profitability and personal growth opportunities the network offered. The first office opened in Brisbane and the concept spread quickly. By the following year the first New South Wales office had opened and Western Australia wasn't far behind. Offices are now operating in South Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory and RE/MAX has specialist agents working in commercial property, auctioneering and business brokering fields. Today In the United States, Dave and Gail Liniger are still at the helm of RE/MAX International. The company’s growth has been unstoppable. RE/MAX International has recorded growth every single year for more than three decades. On average, RE/MAX adds at least one new office to its international network each day and around 10,000 Sales Associates each year. RE/MAX operates in more than 50 countries worldwide, with offices in the United States, Canada, Africa, the Caribbean, Europe, the UK, the Middle East and the Pacific. The RE/MAX philosophy "We find it interesting that some office owners who predicted that the RE/MAX program would fail now find themselves offering additional benefits to their own agents in an attempt to compete with RE/MAX." Gail Liniger, RE/MAX International vice-chairman and co-founder Competing franchise groups all over the world have started offering some of the RE/MAX benefits to their agents in order to compete with us. In Australia, some franchise groups are offering higher commission splits, some are letting agents have their photos on property signboards, others are finally giving their agents direct phone lines. But these companies will not ever match RE/MAX because their philosophies are vastly different to ours. We value people above anything else and our way of doing business is specifically designed to allow Sales Associates and Broker/Owners to achieve great personal success. In our view, if our people are successful and happy, our company will thrive.
