Ultra-sleek and sophisticated, fabulously glamorous and luxe, or undeniably cool and contemporary – whatever your aesthetic sensibilities, the style options for today’s kitchens are limitless. But, one thing we can all agree on is that the centre of the home must reach its full potential.
As the busiest and hardest-working room in the house, the kitchen is always on display and in use. And, this requires a life-affirming space where practicality and performance form the perfect union with exquisite looks.
But where to begin when designing the kitchen of your dreams? It’s easier than you think with these seven expert tips:
First things first: Seek advice from interior professionals to ensure your kitchen layout maximises efficiency and convenience without appearing cramped. For many, the tried-and-tested ‘triangle rule’ – the optimal positioning between the sink, fridge and cooktop — is as relevant as ever. “It’s a great concept to help understand the workflow of a kitchen,” says Jasmine McClelland, principal designer of Jasmine McClelland Design. “It’s all about the movement between the zones without anything blocking the way, whilst also making sure these zones aren’t too close or too far away from each other.”
Ample workspace is essential for a multifunctional kitchen that will also be a joy to spend time in. As interior designer Kate Hardy of Cloth + Stone Designs says: “The kitchen bench is often used for serving and displaying food when entertaining, as a casual dining space, to do homework or even as a home office. Our designs always incorporate enough practical bench space, free from appliances, to ensure flexibility and options.” And, when it comes to the material palette for kitchen benchtops and joinery, take into account both looks and durability, while keeping your budget in mind.
“A common theme amongst our clients is that they’re always chasing storage,” says McClelland. “Having a place to put everything away is crucial, from the larger appliances to the small items like spices and oils. This can have a big impact on the day to day, and will have you loving your kitchen for years to come.”
Consider energy efficiency, as well as your everyday and special occasion cooking and entertaining needs, when selecting the big-ticket items. “Do you roast, steam, wok-fry, shop fresh regularly or pantry store?” asks interior designer Petrina Turner, of Petrina Turner Design.
“If you’re health-conscious and/or prefer a cleaner diet, a combination steam oven is a great investment. Consider a fridge with a bio-fresh drawer to keep fruit and vegies crisp for longer, or a designated wine/drinks drawer fridge that temperature controls perfectly. Some of these appliances can be large, so consider integrating them into cabinetry if you want a more furnished feel.”
Effective and strategically placed lighting – be it dramatic and decorative or more on the subtle and functional side — can truly make a kitchen glow. As McClelland says: “Don’t underestimate the power of warm strip lighting, downlights or a stunning pendant over the island bench. And, always put the lighting on dimmers where possible — it creates a lovely atmosphere at night, and will show off your splashback tiles in the most beautiful way.”
Take time to research the options for everything from tapware to sinks. “Consider the aesthetic and the finish, but also how a tap is mounted, what the mixer is like and if you want it to have specific features,” advises McClelland. “When it comes to sinks, it’s important to pick the right one for your needs — do you hand-wash dishes, and is there enough room for large pots?”
A kitchen that pays homage to your decorating style will hit the right note for years to come. “Draw on your personal preferences for colours and materials, and don’t worry too much about possible future owners of the home,” advises Hardy. “Choosing a beautiful tile as a splashback, a feature pendant light or a marble benchtop will give joy every day and make the job of preparing meals a more pleasurable experience.”
