The Blockheads were thrown into the deep end early on The Block. Scott Cam announced that the first challenge kicked off right after the teams arrived on site.
Ankur and Sharon were confident starting off the House Decider challenge. But a visit from Scott Cam and a misunderstanding put a spanner in the works.
With time ticking away, the newbie team had a lot of work to do before judging.
The team managed to pull off their vision, and they presented a well-finished room to the judges. But when they walked in there was a mixed set of emotions.
“It does feel country, but I’m not sure which continent that country is on. It’s not an Australian version of country,” Darren told the judges.
Darren pointed out the large timber beams featured on the roof and described it as feeling “very French”. He also held concerns for how well their rustic approach would appeal to potential buyers.
“It all works, it’s just the extremely rustic approach is going to be very decisive for the market,” he revealed.
Ankur and Sharon went bold with their colour scheme, opting for olive green walls. They complemented the unique colour with timber finishes, adding that rustic and warm feel to the room.
The team were worried about what the judges would say after they misinterpreted Scott Cam’s advice to change their rustic feature wall to a finished timber look.
But Shaynna praised the couple for the effort and skill they put into the room, pointing out their rustic wooden feature wall behind the bed and the beams on the roof. She felt like they delivered exactly what they were aiming for, a rustic look.
“That’s a lot of work, I feel like there’s a very good eye here,” she said. “It actually works. It’s seriously rustic and they’ve done what they’ve done very well.”
The bedroom took Neale by surprise, who summed it up as “very interesting”. “It’s not something I was expecting to see, but it feels very well executed,” he said.
“But it’s not a concept you want to run with through your house.”
The Blockheads added a pop of colour with the use of red and patterned pillow cases, adding further to the rustic theme.
They kept the space clean and simple by adding a timber cabinet and bedroom chair to the corner.
Ankur and Sharon’s rustic feature wall complemented the whole room, adding hints of green, brown and gold in the timber.
The pair accessorised the room accordingly, adding a pop of colour with a gold side table.
Sharon and Ankor received praise for their bedroom.
Despite this it was clear the judges wanted the team to change the direction they were going down in order to broaden the appeal of their house.
