It’s wallpaper and chintz as you’ve never seen before – Peruvian-born artist Cecilia Paredes has used these materials to create striking artworks where she is almost completely camouflaged by pattern and colour.

Paredes’ work with fabric designs evolved over a journey that took her from Peru to Costa Rica and on to the USA – she now lives in Philadephia. And it’s easy to see the influence of the lush tropical flora of Costa Rica, which made a deep impression on the artist.

The artist says the images reference the concept of a fugitive in a prehistoric jungle, or a lonely migrant making her way in a new country – a theme the artist likes to explore in her works.

She says the lot of the migrant is to become “subsumed into the patterns of another culture, another way of life”.

“To survive one must blend in; learn to be something else, someone new.”

Paredes is currently exhibiting her work at the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA) in Long Beach, California.
