Suzy asks:

“I want to introduce some trendy features in my home, but scared that they will date my house too quickly. I particularly like the current ‘geometric’ trend. What’s your take on it?”

Jane says:

I love having a play with current styles and trends, but usually only apply these designs to things that can easily and inexpensively be updated down the track.

Incorporating the geometric look into your home isn’t difficult and a modern translation of this 70s trend can easily add visual interest to your space.

The key is understanding which parts of your room you would like to play the dominant role. Whilst an easy trend to introduce into your home, it can quickly become overwhelming if you get lost in the boldness the lines of design create. A little will definitely go a long way when introducing geometrics into your home.

Take the above image, for example. Here you can see that the neutral tones of the sofa and room are a great backdrop for these geometric themed cushions; it’s an understated nod to the idea of geometrics without turning the room into disarray of shape and colour.

I love to work with a neutral canvas (light bright walls and all neutral floor finishes) and then layering patterns and colour on top of this. This could be a geometric pattern as you’ve mentioned or any new trends that arise in the future. The Scandi (Scandinavian) look is big these days too, and more often than not, geometric styling is blended with the light timbers and subtle textures of this style.

My bet is that geometric patterns (especially bold and colourful ones) will be done and dusted in another six to 12 months, so definitely don’t spend more than what you would on a few cushions and some accessories to give your home an up-to-the-minute look.

Accentuate only a few features of your home using this trend; and remember that even subtle hints of a style can leave an impression. It’s all about balance, so don’t always think everything has to be bright and bold hexagonal shapes.

Be creative and stay groovy!
