The Block stars Mitch Edwards and Mark McKie share five of their favourite things for Nine's new At Home celebrity series.

In our candid new property series, celebrities and prominent Australians take us behind closed doors and share their five favourite things around their home.

These pieces could be anything, but all carry meaning.

Our At Home series launched with Julie Bishop, the former Minister for Foreign Affairs, and continues with Mitch Edwards and Mark McKie, interior design gurus and breakout stars of The Block who reside in Sydney’s Newport.

Family photo

“The picture of my children is on the sideboard in our entryway… always a reminder of the importance of family and us as one of the ‘new’ style families in Australia,” says Mitch. “Photos of the family are always present in our home.”

“This photo is important to us, as it shows me with the kids when they were young. Now we have grandchildren the same age as them in this picture… it’s a reminder of how far we have all come as a diverse family.”

Memorabilia

“The nail is a handmade one from the demolition of The Oslo, our first time on The Block, back in 2019,” says Mark.

“It’s a reminder of how hard we worked, how it was the beginning of such a huge change in our lives. It’s about the opportunities that have come from that experience, the hard work and the friendship we built with our builders.

“The fact this is handmade from when those homes were first built is amazing… those places were built in 1859, incredible.”

Art

“This painting is very important to me as Mitch painted that the night before we flipped our second property,” says Mark.

“We were finishing painting the walls and the open for inspection was happening the very next day – kind of like a room reveal on The Block. We needed wall art and Mitch painted this work that night, painting over an earlier piece he had done on the same canvas.”

“It represents Mitch’s creativity, the hard work we were prepared to do, and it’s a reminder of where we started with our renovation and design work way back in the beginning. We’ve come a long way.”

Statement jackets

“Fashion is so much a part of our lives, we love dressing well and having fun,” says Mitch.

“This is a snap of just some of the jackets I have at home…. the lilac one with flowers on the sleeve you might recognise as the one I wore on auction day for The Block 2021 and it bought us luck.”

Antique furniture

“We bought this French chair on our first trip to Paris out at the antique markets,” says Mark. “We bought numerous pieces not knowing how we would get them shipped back to Australia… we had to work it out fast!”

“With the other pieces we bought, we changed up the upholstery, but this chair is one of two we have with the original tapestry.

“We will keep them as original pieces to admire the incredible artistry and craftsmanship from the bygone era…. paying homage to the people who created this incredible piece. It will always have a place in our home.”
