Interior designer and The Block judge Darren Palmer’s property – now on the market – is just 400 metres from Bondi Beach, Australia’s most iconic stretch of sand.
This solar-heated pool is but one of the many additions Palmer has made to the home, completing the renovations with his husband Olivier Duvillard.

While most buyers at the time were put off by this property’s slope, landscape architect Nathan Burkett saw an “opportunity to make something really interesting”.

Caroline House in Melbourne’s inner north was named House of the Year back in 2019. It was the addition to the old Edwardian house, and this circular pool, that clinched the win for architecture firm Kennedy Nolan.
“We didn’t want just a one-note blue rectangle,” co-director Patrick Kennedy said at the time. “The clients had specifically asked for a pool in the middle of their house, and we wanted the body of water to extract as much drama as we could. So we put it right up against the building.”

Allis engaged award-winning architect James Russell of Building Quality Constructions to create an indoor-outdoor space with a pool linking the two main parts of the home together.
“It almost feels like you’re living outside,” Allis says, “But the entire house is covered in a net, so you don’t get bugs or leaves coming in, despite the incredibly open feeling you have here.”

When Jim Olivier realised he’d need to start fresh in building this home, he was determined to use as many recycled elements as possible.
