An Aussie property’s standout feature is best seen from aerial view.
Carrickalinga Shed, situated on a hilltop along South Australia’s Fleurieu Peninsula, was crowned the winner under the sustainability category at the 2024 Houses Awards, and will stun with its unique design.
The creation of architecture and interior design practice Architects Ink, the shed is an interpretation of an Australian federation farmhouse, and has an inverted roof to increase its sustainability factor. Due to extreme winds, the roof above the central courtyard was also removed.
Completed in 2023, the shed has external walls and shutters covered in galvanised corrugated iron and structural columns to harvest rainwater.
The awards jury praised the design in an official statement, saying the “robust, low-maintenance materials such as galvanised corrugated iron will provide longevity and ensure the embodied energy invested in this site will serve many generations to come”.
The most eye-catching is the inverted roof with a central garden courtyard. The website of Architects Ink states that the inverted roof allows for greater solar energy access.
Switching to solar energy is not only beneficial to the environment but also helps to reduce day-to-day living costs.
In a nutshell, the more solar panels you have installed at home, the more energy you produce and the less of a reliance on Australia’s electricity grids.
Industrial shutters also filter the amount of light, creating a perfect ambience for every season.
Carrickalinga is a small coastal town, about 60km south of Adelaide. The shed offers idyllic garden and sea views.
