Since time immemorial, communities have gathered around a fire to discuss important issues or celebrate holidays. This is an almost forgotten ritual; we say ‘almost’, because outdoor fire pits are undergoing a modern revival. And why not? There is nothing more relaxing than sitting around a glowing fire.

Fire-pit styles

In the distant past, there was only one type of fuel for a fire pit: timber. Timber fire pits are still available, but they have a drawback that could be of concern in many parts of Australia. Timber fires release burning embers that can’t be contained in an open fire.

Fortunately, modern fire pits offer solutions and alternatives:

  • Most timber-fuelled fire pits come with screens to minimise or eliminate the danger of burning embers escaping.
  • Clean-burning ethanol (also called bioethanol) produces a mesmerising flame. Combined with a sleek, modern burner design, this is becoming the fire pit of choice for both indoor and outdoor use.
  • Another clean-burning fuel comes in gel form. Isopropyl alcohol or methanol are usually the combustible ingredients. These are combined with thickening agents.
  • Gas, ethanol and gel-fuelled fire pits can have fake logs, giving them the look of a traditional fire pit without the danger of burning embers. They are also clean-burning and smokeless, so can be used in more confined areas.

Finding an outdoor fire pit

Finding the perfect outdoor fire pit is as easy today as finding a new barbecue. Dozens of varieties are available. They come in all sizes and price ranges, starting at well under $100 for a basic model and going up to $2000 or more for a designer fire pit.

Most commercially available models are actually freestanding. Listed below are some of the more popular types of freestanding fire pits and their features.

  • Fire tables have a propane or methanol burner in the centre of the table.
  • Timber-burning fire pits are often mounted on low tables and include a top screen. The bowl (or pit) can be recessed or mounted on a stand.
  • Ethanol and gel-fuelled fire pits come in the widest variety of styles and sizes.

A good place to start looking for a freestanding fire pit is eBay, where you will find dozens of styles to choose from, in all price ranges.

Many fire pits do not require professional installation, but if you choose a model that uses natural gas or requires an electrical connection, you will need to hire a gas fitter and/or electrician to hook it up.

If you need a stunning centrepiece in any outdoor area, a modern fire pit is just what you’re looking for. If space is limited, you can buy a small tabletop fire pit that will be a sure conversation starter. If you want your guests to be warm on a cold night, that’s not a problem, either. So many styles and sizes are available today, there’s a fire pit for every budget and lifestyle.
