The newbie teams were thrown into it early on The Block, with the House Decider challenge kicking off just minutes after they arrived on site at the Macedon Ranges Shire in Victoria.
As the show’s first ever tradie couple, Dylan and Jenny were keen to show off their skills and inject their personality into the bedroom space.
Like the other teams, they also wanted to keep the character of the beautiful old country house they were renovating.
When the judges first entered, they appeared pleasantly surprised with the couple’s light and airy bedroom. From the gorgeous green feature wall to the VJ panelling at the back, the pair were off to a good start.
“We’re in the country, so we go green,” Neale told his fellow judges. “I do love that shade of green, I love that sagey shade. I mean, I have it in my own home. It’s a favourite shade of mine, and I love the VJ panelling.”
The couple’s VJ panelling ran across the back of the bed, and featured lovely finishing touches such as a mini vase with flowers.
Their choice of lighting was also bold, with the duo opting for giant glass hanging spheres instead of heavy lampshades.
Shaynna was equally as impressed with the layout of the room, telling her fellow judges: “I love it. I love the fact we have a couple that are both trades.”
Host Scott Cam told the couple that the judges believed the execution of the room was “absolutely excellent”.
Darren also praised the sleek white wardrobe in the corner of the bedroom. He said: “Really great tricks in terms of getting some flat pack and then pretending like that’s a built-in feature. It’s very clever.”
While aesthetically pleasing, the wardrobe also boasted an abundance of space on the inside. As well as a set of drawers on the right hand side, there was also a series of shelves on the left and two separate rails for hanging clothes.
In true country style, the duo also opted for tiny bedside cabinets crafted from a lovely pine wood. They were decorated with mini notepads and a gold candle.
As well as their sage-coloured feature wall, the pair also chose cushions of different shades of green to complement the aesthetic. The bed sheets were kept simple, with the couple opting for a crisp white duvet cover with fringe-patterned detailing throughout.
When it came to flooring, the duo kept things simple with a cosy beige carpet to match the base of the bed.
Despite the room receiving an abundance of praise from the judges, they couldn’t quite get their heads around the vibe of the space in general.
“It feels like a very urban room that somebody has delivered and suddenly thought, ‘Oh my God, we’re in the country. We better just country it up a bit,'” Neale said. “It’s what I think I’d refer to in the past as a kitchen sink room”.
“They’ve thrown everything at it in the hope that something sticks. It’s a bit of a mish-mash.”
Darren added: “They’ve tried really hard. They’ve made individually good choices, but all those individual choices don’t work together and they don’t tell a coherent story of aesthetically what this house could become.
“But they’ve got a good sense of what level of finish this house is going to have to be.”
Neale’s final point was a criticism of the pair’s choice of plant, situated to the right of the wardrobe. “Can we just mention the fact that olive trees do not thrive indoors?” he said of the potted tree. “They’re an outdoor plant.”
“I just did it for style!” Jenny said when she was told about his feedback.
Despite some concerns from the judges, overall Dylan and Jenny presented a strong room for the House Decider challenge.
