Effective and effortless design in a contemporary art deco home

A cohesive, contemporary yet uncomplicated interior scheme distinguishes this recently extended art deco home.

“The client wanted the interiors to appear as if an interior designer had not been engaged; nothing too styled, colour co-ordinated or heavily considered,” Amber Road co-director Yasmine Ghoniem says.

The choice of furniture and fittings (a mix of old and locally made new pieces) was inspired by the Folk Architects‘ design vernacular, with nods to the streamline moderne era throughout.

Suspended at the junction where old meets new hangs a custom sculptural pendant – a modern interpretation of a traditional deco chandelier.

The low living room lounges were selected to mimic the height of the concrete ledge built opposite, creating a beautiful marriage of hard and soft elements.

Folk’s calm yet playful design visually links to the original structure via a continual timber ceiling. Externally, white ceramic tiles and bricks address heritage requirements.

“Creating openness whilst providing a sense of sanctuary within, and a seamless stitch between the old and the new, were our design generators,” Folk Architects director Tim Wilson says.
