Unless you’re the new kid on The Block, you probably know who Dan Reilly and Dani Wales are.
They’re two of the most familiar faces on The Block having first appeared in on Season 5 in 2012 as contestants. The couple returned in 2013 for The Block All Stars.
Their Block career didn’t end there with Dan, a certified builder, working alongside Keith as a Foreman – a gig he started back in 2015 under the title ‘foreboy’.
Dani, originally from a banking background, is now a fully fledged interior designer.
Together the couple also star in their very own series, Dan vs Dani where they provide honest feedback as they walk through the rooms after official judging. And the much-loved series is back again this year!
Dan and Dani have become known for their often savage opinions of the Blockheads’ renovations and their clashing perspectives are entertaining to say the least.
At the end of each walk-through they award one team as the ‘champion’ of the week, and another as the ‘chump’ in their exclusive series Dan V Dani.
Here’s everything they’ve said about the teams’ rooms on The Block 2023.
After a drama-filled first week on The Block, the teams worked hard to ensure their studio bedrooms would blow the judges away. But what they actually received was some of the harshest critique we’ve seen in a while.
But what did Dan and Dani think?
Strolling into Kyle and Leslie’s ‘Zen’ bedroom and Pilates space in House 1, Dani said it had a “beautiful feel” while Dan agreed it felt “calm”.
But he was quick to point out the one thing he didn’t like. “The joinery is sticking out past the plaster, it should be flush,” he said of the wardrobes.
“I don’t dislike that… at all.” Dani interjected, prompting a shocked, “Excuse me?” from Dan. “If I did that on my job, you’d be having a go at me!” he replied.
“If you did that on our job, it would be because I’ve drawn it that way,” she responded. Dani did say that she didn’t like the finish on the wardrobe, commenting that it “wasn’t warm enough”.
Dan loved the visual aspect of there being no skirting board around the room, but added: “Practicality wise? Shocking.”
Unlike the judges, Dani quite liked the Pilates room in the back of their room. “It’s a really good effort,” she said.
In House 2, Leah and Ash’s space, the team actually complimented the pull-out bed that the judges had harshly critiqued at Room Reveals.
“It definitely allows you to use the space as more than a bedroom,” she said, before both she and Dan slammed the colour of the floor.
“I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it,” he concluded of the space.
In Kristy and Brett’s House 3 room, Dani was quick to slam the amount of skylights the team had put in the space.
But there was one thing she absolutely despised.
“That is the thing I hate most in this room,” she said. “The wallpaper. I hate it so much.”
“It makes it feel cold,” Dan agreed, with Dani concluding: “I really don’t feel good in this space.”
Next, it was time to view Steph and Gian’s winning room in House 4.
Dani loved the space, but described the fireplace as “so weird”.
“There’s nothing there either to symbolise the fact that there’s a fireplace,” she said. “Still a nice room, they’ve done well.”
House 5, Eliza and Liberty, received the harshest criticism from the judges. Dan and Dani weren’t overly impressed either.
“Are you going to study there and look at wallpaper we saw 10 years ago?” Dan said, pointing out the study nook.
“The TV is odd, it feels like an afterthought,” Dani added. But she did say the room would “feel very nice when everything is together.”
Kicking off their exclusive series in 2023, Dan and Dani headed to Charming Street to take a peek inside the teams’ studio bathrooms.
They started in Kyle and Leslie’s winning bathroom in House 1, and were pleasantly surprised by what the team had created.
Dani began her critique with a compliment, calling it a “strong start.”
But she soon added that she “disliked the shower screen a lot”, noting that the curve of the screen didn’t match the wall.
“That’s what I’m finding most challenging about the ceiling line, it’s not on the same curvature… maybe the showerhead needed to be a standard shower arm,” she said.
“I am conflicted about the ceiling so I’m not not 100%… I think, pretty courageous.”
While the jury was out on the ceiling, Dani “loved” the finishes in Kyle and Leslie’s bathroom and labelled the space “super calming”.
When it came to Leah and Ash’s House 2, Dani exclaimed: “This is not like anything we’ve ever seen on The Block. I do like it when people push the boundaries, so I’m always open for something new.”
The home had been described as a “night club” by new judge Marty Fox, but the couple had nothing but praise for the unique space – apart from one detail.
“Maybe the walls could have still been in this render, but something a bit more soft…” Dani said, while Dan disagreed: “I like the walls as is, to be honest.”
Over in House 3, the team weren’t overly drawn to Kristy and Brett’s space. “I’ve seen these tiles before,” Dan said.
“I don’t know what that arch thing is…” he added, pointing towards their shower.
Dani agreed: “There’s definitely some pros here, just be careful not to rest on what previous years have done.”
The couple pointed out that there were a “few functionality issues” in Steph and Gian’s studio bathroom in House 4.
“Now I think about that, why would you want that over the toilet? Extra storage space for toilet paper?” Dan said at the cupboard space.
“It’s not a great start to The Block for them,” the pair agreed.
In Eliza and Liberty’s House 5, a giddy Dani said: “I love these floor tiles. They’re so beautiful.”
“For the first effort, it’s not bad!” Dan added.
While the first instalment of Dan vs Dani won’t arrive until after the first official room reveal, Dani teased a little of what we can expect from the exclusive series in 2023.
Taking to her Instagram stories she wrote: “Ready and raring to give only positive and constructive feedback to the contestant’s rooms whilst not forgetting how hard it is to be a contestant ????.”
The eyeroll emoji was a good indication that wouldn’t be the case from our sassy Dani.
“Sorry not sorry in advanced for my terrible poker face and sometimes (only sometime I promise) harsh words ????.”
“Seriously though, there’s some ripper rooms coming up this season (and some not so ripper rooms – been there, don’t worry I haven’t forgot).”
