Ever wondered what kind of home houses royalty?

The royal family are offering the curious a glimpse into Clarence House, the home of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, to celebrate the duke’s 70th birthday.

Partnering with Google Arts and Culture, the royal family’s virtual tour of Clarence House covers the residence’s main entrance, the Lancaster Room (which acts as a kind of waiting room for guests), the Morning Room, the Library, the Dining Room, the Garden Room and the House Corridor, which is a quasi-tribute to the Queen Mother’s love of horses.

Each of the principal rooms presented is adorned with historic artwork and heritage artefacts.

Built between 1825 and 1827 for the Duke of Clarence and his wife Adelaide, Clarence House was designed by architect John Nash. It’s only a five-minute drive from the Queen’s Buckingham Palace.

In the years before Prince Charles and Camilla made the palace home, many of their royal relatives lived there.

Between 1949 and 1952, Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh lived at Clarence House, and in the following 50 years, the palace was home to the Queen Mother. In 2003, Prince Charles moved into the residence following the death of the Queen Mother the year before.

While the home has been passed through generations, Senior Curator of Decorative Arts for Royal Collection Trust, Kathryn Jones, said both Charles and Camilla have made the space their own.

“The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have now made it into their home, so it reflects their taste, ” Jones said of its interior.

“The major change has been in the Dining Room which has the unusual and striking bronze coving to the ceiling.

“The other thing that always strikes you when you are inside the house is how much the garden is present – many of the rooms look out into the garden and there is a sense of it almost like an extra room to the house.”

Despite the particular personal touches of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, a Clarence House spokesperson made note of how many items in the house reflect the style of Queen Elizabeth and The Queen Mother.

“Their Royal Highnesses love Clarence House and although they have made it their home with their own personal touches, the Queen Mother’s legacy lives on and is evident throughout the house,” the spokesperson said.
