Imagine a life so peacefully secluded that you have to get on a boat to go to the shops.

We’ve found it. Paradise is yours for $1.9 million.

A charming waterfront hideaway at Great Mackerel Beach in New South Wales has been listed after being held by the same family since the 1970s.

Agent BJ Edwards from LJ Hooker Palm Beach says “throw a stone” from the cottage and you’d hit one the $25 million estates at neighbouring Palm Beach.

The cottage has jaw-dropping water panoramas and private stairs to the beach, and is only a 350-metre stroll to the ferry wharf.

The new owner can jump aboard the ferry for the two-kilometre journey into Palm Beach to drop in at cafes, restaurants, and shops. Or, some home owners have tenders for the quick trip, Edwards says, and it is this supremely private boat access that buyers love.

Great Mackerel Beach is 43 kilometres from Sydney, on the western shores of Pittwater, within the picturesque Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park.

Edwards says Great Mackerel Beach is “not a destination address” inundated with tourists. As such, even Palm Beach homeowners have been known to have a weekender at Great Mackerel.

The north-facing living rooms are bathed in sun, which bounces off enormous cathedral ceilings.

Exposed timber beams convey a rustic, coastal charm.

The ground floor contains the vast living and lounge area, with an endless water view thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows.

These peel back to a long balcony, looking across the Pittwater to Barrenjoey Headland and lighthouse.

Upstairs, a timber kitchen also faces the water, and a void lends light and a sense of space.

A covered, lower-level deck has sensational vistas of its own, Edward says.

The vintage gem is one of only two homes for sale in Great Mackerel Beach.
