Your top picks of the shows to watch this week, what to watch out for and the latest TV news.
Netflix
This Netflix comedy special is a revelation. Comedian and writer Hannah Gadsby is incredibly honest, and thought-provoking. A must-see; top of the list.
ABC TV and ABC iview, Monday, 8pm
This is such a gem of a show, and a consistently high-rating program for the ABC. They had better not ever get rid of it.
Channel 9, Wednesday, 8.30pm
Eddie McGuire and the team have copped a lot of flack about the ratings, which are nowhere near what they used to be. But leading into the footy finals, this is where Eddie and the team excel. Will it be back next year?
Foxtel Showcase and Eleven
This series turns 20 this year, and I’m feeling nostalgic. The strength of this series, two decades later – it doesn’t date. The word iconic really doesn’t do it justice.
Netflix
The new cast of this remake, including Nicollette Sheridan as Alexis Carrington, do “resting bitch face really well”.
Stan
One of the world’s true broadcasting legends works his magic in this doco on the Great Barrier Reef. The sad thing is, we don’t know if the reef will be what it was in 20 years’ time.
Nine Gem, Monday – Friday
Mind the pedestrian! Patricia Routledge’s glorious Hyacinth Bucket (or Bouquet, depending on who you talk to) is my favourite ever character on British television. Poor bloody Richard.
YouTube
This reminds me of dancing around the living room as a child. Those dance routines are worth revisiting. Nothing like this on television these days – the younger generation are missing out.
Wimbledon Finals
Channel 7, July 14 and 15, 10.45pm
Strawberries and cream – and Champagne – are exactly what’s on order at the weekend for tennis fans around the world.
Australian Survivor
Channel 10, coming soon
I am a true Survivor fan and there is a passionate team behind the Australian version. The new season, Champions versus Contenders, will include some high profile names – let’s hope they do the game justice.
Paddington Station 24/7
7Two, July 14, 7.30pm
In this episode we learn London’s Paddington Station has 66 million visitors every year. Watch for Frank, the customer service assistant.
Stars hurt by dumped Blake Mysteries
How will The Blake Mysteries: Ghost Stories, go on Channel 7? The show has lost its main star, Craig McLachlan, after allegations of sexual harassment, and the ABC dumped it.
The stars – including Nadine Garner, who will step up to the lead role – are still perplexed that the ABC dropped the series, which was the highest-rating drama in the country.
“It was hurtful, especially when so many people have given years of their lives to a show,” Garner said recently.
Honey Badger chases sweet success
Who is the Honey Badger? His name is Nick Cummins, and Channel 10 will be hoping the 30-year-old rugby union player will be ratings gold as the new Bachelor.
Last year Channel 10 chose Sophie Monk as the Bachelorette, and millions of eyeballs tuned in. Ten will be hoping the high-profile Bachelor – or The Badgelor, as he is now known – will do the same.
“I have just finished the last series of The Good Fight. I also love Chicago PD, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Madam Secretary is also a favourite. Local shows also on the top of my list include Doctor Doctor, Wentworth, Have You Been Paying Attention, [and] The Weekly.”
