Consider a powder room as an opportunity to show off, in the most stylish way of course. Small space, bold statement potential and, yes, a talking point for guests who make use of it.
“A powder room is a conversation starter – it’s probably my favourite room in the house,” says Shona McElroy, principal of Sydney-based Smac Studio.
“It doesn’t have to match the rest of the home, and guests who use it may get a little bit of a surprise.”
Architect Sara Waller agrees, saying, “Powder rooms offer a unique opportunity to create something exceptional in a compact space, allowing for bold and sophisticated design.
“It’s all about transforming a necessity into a captivating experience.”
For Waller, a custom-made quartzite vanity, a striking pendant light and textural wall panelling can elevate the room from functional to phenomenal.
A standout for McElroy was a powder room created under a staircase, with a ceiling curved off on the underside to belie any hint of stairs, a Christopher Boots Petra sconce in pink onyx, brushed chrome tapware by Astra Walker, a verde antigua vanity marble and Venetian plaster walls.
Two semi-circular, custom-made mirrors, placed to reflect each other, created an optical illusion that contributed to a playful space, she adds.
McElroy’s tips for those who want to create an individual space include choosing lightware that also functions as a piece of art, and an interesting, perhaps vintage, mirror.
A pop of colour can add drama, and low, front-facing, flattering lighting can create a darker, moodier space.
Because there are no moisture concerns from a shower or bath, a powder room is the place to splurge on expensive, decorative wallcoverings.
While many people opt for marble floors, a timber floor that echoes the tonality of a benchtop can also work beautifully, McElroy says.
Use accessories to further elevate the look. Two of McElroy’s favourites are the Kartell Jellies towel hook and the Ostrea Rock vase by Hein Studio.
A small brass bin, a tray styled with Italian soaps and a candle lit while entertaining are the finishing touches to a room fit for royalty.
