Sun-kissed summer evenings will soon be knocking at our doors, bringing friends and family with them. Whether you’ve planned a summer soiree or have friends staying for the weekend, there’s nothing quite like sharing the longer days with your loved ones.

But sometimes, welcoming guests can mean more stress than relaxation.

The thought of preparing your home and ensuring everyone is comfortable during their stay can be overwhelming. Yet Sarah Nolen from Birdblack Design asserts that with a little preparation and the right mindset, hosting can become an absolute breeze – it all comes down to “less is more.”

Optimise your storage

To create a fresh airy summer feel in your home, the key is to ensure all remnants of the shorter,  winter days are hidden. “Pack away all items related to the cooler months,” Nolen advises. “Storage solutions are critical. Ensure each room has adequate storage available.”

After stowing away those bulky winter items, it’s the perfect time to re-evaluate your furniture to create highly-useable spaces. Nolen explains that choosing multi-use, moveable pieces makes them more user-friendly.

“Items like ottomans and side tables mean that everyone can be seated comfortably and with plenty of space around them. Then they can be returned to their daily position for functionality,” she says.

Transform guest rooms with quality bedding

An easy way to give your guest bedroom a fresh summer ambience is by upgrading your bedding. Designer Bree Leech says quality bedding goes a long way to making your guests feel welcome.

“Good quality linens and quilt covers are the best choice for bedding. Ensure you are layering the bedding to allow for different weather and personal preferences. Light sheets, a lightweight doona, and the option of a light blanket so your guests can be comfortable while they sleep,” Leech explains.

To complement quality bedding, Leech believes a signature scent is the ultimate secret to giving your guest bedroom that perfect summer vibe.

“Add a fresh summery room scent or have fresh flowers or foliage on the table or bedside. A room scent is a must-have for a welcoming and stress-free environment for summer guests.”

Simple guest bedroom transformations

A revamp doesn’t have to mean a renovation or paint job. Leech explains changing small things like the colours and adding minor additions to a bedroom can give it an entirely new look and fresh appeal.

Creating a summer feel in the bedroom and the home can be done by simply considering the palette featured. Opt for light, sunny colour schemes that have pale yellows, blues, and soft terracotta hues with a base of bright white.”

Leech explains how easy it is to revamp a bedroom by simply changing the materials used and adding small complementary touches. “Look at featuring natural breathable materials in bedding and decor like linen, cotton or bamboo. Add some cushions that complement and contrast for interest.”

The goal of a summer revamp is a simple, fresh feel, but it’s easy to add a few little extras that make a room pop and will have your guests feeling like they’re at home.

“Make sure all the decor is co-ordinated but relaxed, having little touches such as fresh flowers, a beautiful carafe and matching glass for water on the bedside table and fresh towels on the bed ready for a guest to use. All of these will elevate the experience,” Leech added.

Avoid clutter

When it comes to making your home easily transferable from wintery comfort to summer freshness, Nolen’s mantra is clear. “Avoid clutter at all costs.”

By avoiding clutter, you not only open the physical space but also open the mental space that allows for relaxation with ease. A clutter-free environment fosters a sense of calm. “Remove any unnecessary decor items to keep the house airy and light.”

As the warmth of summer approaches and evenings spent with loved ones draw nearer, preparing your home for guests does not need to be a burden. Simplicity creates comfort. By updating linens, utilising a fresh summer palette and banishing clutter, your home can effortlessly transform into a holiday oasis.
