The first home I ever owned was Malibu Barbie’s Dreamhouse.
It had six rooms – including an outdoor living room – ranged over three floors, with a pool, a vintage lift and chic Moderne furniture. Sure it was made from cardboard and plastic, but property is property! I was on the ladder at six!
Well, now four lucky Barbie fans will get to live out their Californian fantasy when her “real-life” Malibu Dreamhouse becomes available for through Airbnb to commemorate Barbie’s 60th anniversary.
Just like the toy-sized Dreamhouse, this one has a sensational pool and fully stocked Barbie-style dressing room. There’s also pink as far as the eye can see.
“Before women were allowed to open their own bank accounts, Barbie bought her first Dreamhouse,” the listing says.
“As a modern homeowner and entrepreneur, Barbie is very excited to open her home by listing it on Airbnb to share her story and to continue to inspire fans around the world.”
The Dreamhouse is meant to “bring to life what drives Barbie” with a spotlight on the diverse jobs Barbie’s had in her 60 years, “showcasing underrepresented career paths and giving all girls a voice”.
To highlight Barbie’s extensive career choices, the Dreamhouse comes with a packed walk-in wardrobe of work clothes, from an astronaut’s space suit, to a doctor’s coat, to engineers uniform and everything in between.
One word describes the decor: Luxe.
There are Mid-century and modern pieces throughout the home, as well as lush pink sheepskins, deep shag rugs with pink polkadots, and mountains of pink and cerise cushions.
The home has its own cinema, infinity pool – perfect for sipping pink champers as you watch the Malibu sunset – a hobby studio, sports court and meditation space, an outdoor dining patio and fully stocked kitchen. It usually has a slide from the first floor to the pool, but unfortunately, it will not be on site during the stay as “Barbie always travels with her slide”.
The decor is classic Barbie, with powder pink, fuchsia, buff and cerise everywhere – even in the kitchen where there’s a powder pink Le Creuset set to cook with.
As an added bonus, Airbnb will donate the cost of the booking to Barbie’s Dream Gap Project GoFundMe initiative that aims to encourage girls to dream big about their futures.
And you’ll be welcomed to the home by US fencing medalist Ibtihaj Muhammad, who will give the lucky guest a one-on-one fencing lesson.
You’ll also get a meet and greet with hairstylist Jen Atkin, a makeover from Mane Addicts Creator Collective, an cooking lesson with one of Malibu’s favourite female business owners Gina Clarke-Helm of Malibu Seaside Chef, and a behind-the-scenes tour of Columbia Memorial Space Centre with pilot and aerospace engineer Jill Meyers.
Only one two-night stay is available. It will cost just AUD $136 a night, plus taxes and fees, and the opportunity to nab those nights opens at at 7am on October 24.
