The right buyer will appreciate a four-bedroom shipping container home “work of art,” says the US listing agent in Boulder, Colorado.
At US$3.15 million (AUD$4.4 million), the property that boasts mountain views from every room is one of the more expensive container homes we’ve seen from around the world.
It may look isolated, but the property is just a 15-minute walk (or a five-minute drive) from downtown Boulder and the nearby University of Colorado Boulder campus.
The owners bought the property in 2005 and paired two 16m shipping containers brought in from Chicago with 100-year-old reclaimed wood from a barn in Indiana. The former barn has been repurposed for the exterior and is also used in the ceiling and floor.
The custom build was completed in 2018 and very little of the original single-family home remains.
The design and materials are quintessentially modern: wide doorways, open-plan kitchen and dining, and clean lines made from concrete, steel, and recycled shipping containers. But the farmhouse interiors blend seamlessly into the surrounding mountain views.
The house is strategically positioned on the 870 square-metre property so it gets views in every direction, including the iconic Flatirons to the south, the Red Rocks and Foothills to the north, and eastern vistas of downtown Boulder.
“It’s an exceptionally quiet and private street,” said Zeldner.
Glass feature walls flood the living spaces with natural light and a retractable garage-style door on the second storey opens out to the deck like an invisible extension of the lounge.
“Both modern and rustic, with a highly functional layout and exceptional design that captures amazing views. This home is unique in that it appeals to families, young professionals, empty nesters, and everybody in between,” said Zeldner.
The utility bills are also kept “extremely low” because of sustainable design features.
In spite of the high six-figure price tag, the listing has received strong interest. Zeldner puts that down to the functional living space.
“The design is excellent, the execution is very impressive, and the owners put a ton of thought into the home. It’s truly an experience to tour this property,” he said.
Real estate agents are enjoying an influx of space-seeking Californians and New Yorkers to the state. Google has also recently built their fifth-largest campus in the small city, which is likely to give the college town a boost.
