It seems perfectly fitting that former PR queen Roxy Jacenko should have first spotted this Sydney eastern suburbs residence on Instagram. After all, the powerhouse mother of two, who last year closed her Sweaty Betty PR firm to concentrate on her social influencer representation company The Ministry of Talent, has long appreciated the connectivity of social media better than anyone.
And for Jacenko and her husband Oliver Curtis, work met life when they discovered five years ago that the luxurious tri-level family home revelling in breathtaking Harbour views was on the market.
“I saw it on Instagram, funnily enough, and that was just four days prior to the auction,” Jacenko recalls. “We ended up buying it at the auction after just one visit. It just shows the power of how people consume media.”
At the time, however, the Vaucluse house was not representative of Jacenko’s glamorous signature style. Not that she or Curtis were dissuaded.
“There were a lot of wood finishes, which I didn’t love, and the master bathroom was exposed to the bedroom,” Jacenko says. “But we obviously felt that the bones of the house were really good – it had a great family-home layout. The house came with a swimming pool and garden, and a dedicated area for our kids, which meant that they had their own space. I’m a very decisive person – and I always knew this was right for us. It was then about going in and doing a renovation from an aesthetic perspective.”
Engaging her long-time friend, design maven Blainey North of eponymous interior and architecture studio Blainey North & Associates, as well as builder Jcorp Construction, Jacenko never doubted that the top-to-toe reinvigoration was in proficient hands.
“I was blown away by everything Blainey came to me with,” says Jacenko. “She has the expertise. I really trusted her. What she put together for us was remarkable.”
Jacenko’s faith was indeed rewarded. Over a period of eight months, the home was primed for an exciting, and even dazzling, future. With entirely new interiors, described in style by North as “brutal decadence”, the light-bathed residence was awarded a spectacular reboot.
No expense was spared in the transformation, which even saw a slab of Italian marble for the kitchen bench “craned in over the balcony, because they couldn’t get it up any other way”.
The sprawling five-bedroom and five-bathroom home with a showstopping main bedroom suite now features an outdoor entertaining domain, gym, home cinema, wine room and infra-red sauna. Not to mention a “VIP glam room” complete with hair-washing basin and makeup stations.
“The house is very hotel-esque and it’s a sanctuary,” says Jacenko. “You do feel like you’re on holiday. The renovation really took the home to another level.”
That’s not to say, though, that form comes before function. Plentiful storage in the core living zones keeps everyday clutter at bay – “I’m very minimalist and like everything to be tidy, whilst still being homely”, Jacenko muses, while expansive entertaining and private domains allow the home to seamlessly transition from relaxed family abode to consummate party host. And that it has done over the past five years on many an occasion, as Jacenko reveals with a smile.
“We’ve had some amazing events and functions here, including my 40th,” she says.
Certainly, the home – set within manicured gardens beautifully refreshed and replenished by another of Jacenko’s dear friends, renowned landscape designer Annie Wilkes – has been the perfect “headquarters” for the couple and their children, Pixie, 11, and Hunter, nine.
But while the family couldn’t want for more in a home, they are ready for the next chapter. With Curtis currently based between Tasmania and Singapore for work commitments, a move to an apartment is on the cards.
As a result, the home will soon have a new custodian. Listed by David Malouf of Highland Double Bay, the property – scheduled to go to auction on Thursday June 15 – has hit the market with $14 million price hopes.
“This has been an amazing family home for us all, but an apartment will suit our lifestyle better now,” says Jacenko. “It’s time for another family to really make the most of this home and its amazing facilities.”
