Nestled below Lion’s Head in South Africa is the magnificent OVD 919 by SAOTA architects.
The home is inspired by its context – a 2879 square metre steep site on the crest of a ridge with 360-degree views of Cape Town landmarks Robben Island, Camps Bay and Table Mountain.
A flush concrete finish emphasises its monumental external form and polished interiors.
“The position and architecture is powerful in form, refined in detailing, yet sensitive to Cape Town’s natural beauty,” says the project’s lead architect, Philip Olmesdahl.
The living areas are placed in a horseshoe-like layout to maximise views while providing a sheltered central courtyard. At this level, the borders are transparent, allowing internal spaces to simply flow outdoors.
“The distinctive concrete pergola provides a covered terrace and frames views north, south and, through a void, to Lion’s Head behind,” Olmesdahl says.
Materials of varying textures were selected to highlight the uncluttered, sculptural and contemporary nature of the architecture.
“The consistence in the grain and tones of the finishes combined with the lack of articulation is responsible for the calm sense of the house,” Olmesdahl says.
