What is plantscaping?

As you guessed, ‘plantscaping’ is all about using potted plants in your outdoor spaces to create layers and visual excitement. Usually designed to work well on balconies, decks and patios, plantscaping can marry different areas of your garden and fill up unused space.

Your garden style

If your garden has a strong theme, the next step is to find a way to unite your gardening style with your patio style – a way to add natural elements to your man-made structure. You are essentially echoing the horticultural style you’ve developed in your garden, but toning down elements such as plants, colours and textures. Remember, you’re not aiming to replicate your garden entirely; you’re trying to extend it.

The right plants

Potted plants and flowers are the best choice for a plantscaping theme. Using the same plants and flowers as you’ve planted in your garden, but in potted form, is a great way to tie the two areas.

Plants and flowers that add visual and sensory appeal are great for adding another element to your outdoor area. Flowers such as lavender and citrus trees are wonderfully perfumed and pleasant to look at. Succulents won’t add any fragrance to the area but are a fashionable choice for ornamental garden themes and need very little maintenance.

Instead of using stock-standard planter pots, choose pots that tie in with your garden style. If your garden style is rustic, reuse old metal jugs and containers as planter pots; if your garden style is organic, use eco-friendly timber planter pots.

Comfort is key

Remember that your deck area needs to be comfortable as well as visually appealing. Once you’ve taken care of your plantscaping theme, consider adding outdoor furniture pieces such as a dining table, sun lounges or even outdoor beanbags. If your deck is uncovered and gets a lot of sunlight, adding outdoor shading is a worthwhile investment.

Plantscaping is a great way to turn dead space into a living green feature that ties your outdoor space together. Buy some pots and plants and get plantscaping.
