Just like many people do with their resolutions at the end of each year, editors often take the last few months of any given year to look back on the top decor trends that made a mark on interiors and look to the future to predict where the world of decor is heading.

In 2018, we saw a move away from strict minimalism toward a more collected and curated approach to design, layering a room with just a couple of trends can transform it from ordinary to striking. Are you curious to know what the next big trends in decor will be? From midcentury Italian curves to boucle accents and bold primary hues, these are the home decor trends to look out for in 2019.

Mushroom lamps

We’ve seen the resurgence of dome or mushroom lamps in 2018, but something tells us this will only be amplified in 2019. With major retailers already jumping on the bandwagon and vintage models like the Oluce Attolo lamp becoming harder to find, all signs point to this trend only gaining traction next year—and we’re fully on board with this sculptural addition to our decor.

Maximalism

While the world of interiors has been dominated by minimalist Scandinavian design these past few years, all signs are pointing toward a return to more maximalist tendencies. That’s not to say everyone will revert to a more traditional or classic style. Instead, we predict people will be more thoughtful about acquiring long-lasting pieces from different periods and styles to create interiors that are intrinsically unique.

Mid century Italian

Mid century has been losing steam in the last few years, but mid century Italian style is an entirely different beast from the rest of the movement. While on the American side, the movement was dominated by sleek teak storage pieces, Italian designers introduced curved furniture, delicate lines, and bold colours to the movement.

Primary hues

In 2017, there were dusty pastel tones, and in 2018, there were deep jewel hues. We’ve followed the full colour spectrum in recent years, but next year, we’re predicting bold primary colours will make a comeback: Bold rusty reds, deep indigo blues, and bright mustard yellows are at the forefront of the latest decor collections, and we’re only expecting this trend to be amplified in 2019.

Plinth tables

Since minimal Scandinavian furniture with ultra-skinny legs has dominated interiors in recent years, it’s only natural that the pendulum would swing back toward weighty low-slung pieces that can balance out more delicate furniture pieces. Enter: plinth tables. Coupled with the recent hype over coloured marble and other stone finishes, these low and heavy tables are expected to have a moment in 2019.

Rice paper lanterns

Isamu Noguchi has always been coveted for his iconic pieces, from his infamous coffee table for Hermann Miller to his series of Akari lanterns and lamps. This year, we’ve seen his beloved rice paper lanterns have a serious moment in decor—which is only expected to trickle down to more mass retailers. IKEA, which also popularised the paper lanterns in the 1990s, has already released a few new models.

Boucle accents

Led in part by Goop’s collection for CB2 and higher-end retailers like HomeNature, the return of boucle fabric is officially here. A more sensible follow-up to the recent faux-fur wave, boucle provides texture and high style without the shedding. An easier-to-maintain but equally chic solution, boucle could be considered the labradoodle of decor.
