After a long day juggling work commitments with young kids in tow, down time to relax is a simple pleasure.

That’s why a bedroom should be a sanctuary and when renovating this one, in our former family home in Prahran, I knew exactly how I wanted it to look and feel.

I was aiming for modern and fresh, with a luxurious finish, and the best way to achieve that high-end feel was to introduce beautiful fabrics and leathers, with quality furniture.

Room to move

Some of the key things to consider when choosing furniture for a bedroom is scale and proportion.

It’s so important to select pieces that suit the space in relation to its size and how you’ll be using it.

If you’ve got a bigger area, adding a chair and ottoman to create a reading nook is a practical way to use that extra space. Here, the bed frame is raised off the ground to give a sense of lightness to the room and to extend the floor space.

Playing the blues

I wanted to create a moody feel when choosing the colour palette for this room and Style School stylist Aimee Tarulli came to the rescue to balance the dark hues.

“Moody doesn’t have to be masculine,” Tarulli says of the bedroom’s grey-toned palette.

“I offset all of the dark tones with soft, light greys and feminine art above the bed.”

The textural bedhead in a warm charcoal tone is timeless, and easy to accessorise. The grey veins running through the marble-topped bedside tables complement the bed beautifully. “To add to the moodiness, I wanted to have quite striking bedside lamps,” Tarulli says.

“The wall-mounted, black lamps add a real sense of luxury to the space.”
