Firstly, consider style. If your home has traditional accents, consider bringing those to life with a stylish traditional rug. Think Persian or Provincial styles.
If, however, you want to make a bold statement of colour, texture or impact, then you could consider a modern abstract or block-colour rug.
Wool rugs are beautiful, but they also pile, which may not be great for crawling babies or young children, as they may ingest the fibres. For a kids’ room, consider an acrylic heat-set weave. Not only will it withstand wear and tear, it is a lot cheaper too.
Whether you choose a high-pile or low-weave rug, you should ultimately consider the room traffic. High-pile will wear easily and more obviously in a busy room, whereas a sisal rug will withstand stronger foot traffic.
When choosing size, think about the size of your room. Nothing looks worse than a too-small rug in a large room. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to go a little larger – placing furniture on (rather than around) a rug is a style statement in itself.
Consider adding an outdoor or marine-grade rug to your alfresco area for an inviting and unique style statement.
Whichever rug you choose, make sure it accentuates your style and personality – because that is what interior design is all about.
