There are myriad ways to express your individuality through interior design. Sometimes, though, you know when an element has had quite enough airtime and can safely be tucked back in a cupboard – until it becomes retro, and cool once more.

Rose gold

We saw the back of copper, but its sister shade rose gold also has limited life left. Bring me some bubbly to toast its last hurrah.

From cupboard fronts to handles and taps, champagne metallic offers a softer bridge in colour and is right up there with anthracite.

Faux fur/hair cushions

It would be better in 2019 not to wonder if a dyed-pink goat had decided to curl up among the cushions on a bed to die. These cushions are “quirky” and “fun” and “cute” but they have had their day. Let them rest in peace, along with Turkish-patterned shag rugs.

Oversized butler’s pantries

If you have a mansion feel free to ignore this. If you have weekly dinner parties or regularly have caterers working in your home, ignore this. However, if you have an average amount of floor space with an average area allocated to the kitchen, think about whether you really need a butler’s pantry to whisk your dirty dinner dishes away to. The main kitchen should be given enough space and functionality to work on its own. That means the kitchen needs cleaning zones, including bins, cooking zones and prep zones at the very least.

Shaped tiles

There are always exceptions to every rule, but generally speaking, 2019 should see off shaped tiles. Hexagons went out of favour a few years ago, the tear drop and scales should soon follow. A clearing of the decks will leave room for new innovations, so keep an eye out for the next big thing in tile interest.

A special mention also for digitally printed tiles. We’ve had some fun with them but they will carbon-date your interiors.

Vertical gardens

If you have a small backyard or courtyard, or exterior apartment walls are your only opportunity for a green life, then a vertical garden is a brilliant solution. But let’s not see them in bathrooms, lounges, entrances or dining rooms unless absolutely necessary. Let gardens be for the outdoors.
