On the face of it, Sydney seems like a singleton’s dream: the sun is always shining, the pubs pumping and the clubs jumping. Though when you’re actually out there looking for love, it can also seem like a daunting concrete jungle full of unapproachable beautiful people. Fear not, dear reader, the love you seek may be closer to home than you think. Here’s our guide to the suburbs where you won’t have to stay up all night to get lucky.

First, the good news: Sydney has the highest number of singleton suburbs – male and female – of any major city in Australia. Unfortunately, none of those suburbs seem to overlap.

Where the boys are

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), you’re most likely to find Sydney bachelors in suburbs in the lower north shore, inner city and inner west, including St Leonards, North Sydney, Milsons Point, Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Alexandria and Erskineville.

All the single ladies

Go east, young man! Sydney’s single ladies tend to live in places like Tamarama, Bronte, Bondi, and also the inner west: Birchgrove, Balmain, Rozelle and surrounds.

Combined, the 10 Sydney suburbs with the highest number of single folk (people who have never been married, according to the latest ABS census data) are:

Bear in mind that there are also some surprising new growth areas, such as Harris Park, which people are hailing the “Paddington of the West”, where the high number of students and young professionals heralds good things for singles looking to mingle. (52 per cent of residents are under the age of 35, and only 16 per cent of households are families.)

Get out there

So you’re in the right suburb, where now? Along with local pub and bars, supermarkets have long been touted as prime pick-up locations. Local gyms, yoga classes, classes of any description, really, are also great places to find like-minded people. Community colleges offer a wide range of adult-education options, as do most universities.
