Bathrooms are possibly one of the hardest spaces in the home to style because they are so functional, and no one wants décor getting in the way of a quick shower.
That’s why less is more in a bathroom, according to The Block judge Shaynna Blaze, who will review the teams’ master ensuites in the next episode.
“It’s not the area to clutter things up for the sake of just having something to fill a space,” Shaynna told 9Entertainment.
“I always look at the types of towels you’re going to do in there because they’re the biggest part of the styling. Whether you’re going for a very subdued look or a classy look, you just stick to the white texture type, or whether it needs a little bit of colour to amp up to it,” she explained.
“I don’t tend to do a lot of pattern in my towels because if you do a lot of pattern and they’re big bold patterns, that gives it a very young feel. You work out the sophistication of the bathroom you want and work the patterns and the textures for that,” she added.
Once you’ve picked your towels it’s time to look at what you’re putting on the vanity and in the shower. Whether it’s soap, candles or even plants, Shaynna said these items need to “enhance the mood” and have a “practical reason to be there”.
“Anything more than that you’ve got to make sure you’ve got the right space and area, that it doesn’t become something that gets knocked over, or is just in the way and is there with no actual reason.”
If you’re worried about having enough storage, the interior designer suggested adding pots or baskets, but only if you have a big bathroom. That’s because she thinks there should be enough storage in the vanity unit.
When you’re styling a bathroom it’s also a good idea to think about how often you’re able to clean it. The more bits and pieces you have decorating the room, the more dusting you’ll have to do.
But if you want to avoid mopping the floor as often, Shaynna has shared a top hack for hiding mess.
“I like to have a pattern on my floor and the reason for that is when you’re in the bathroom people drop a lot of hair — whether you’re a blonde or a dark-haired person — and that hides a few sins, and you’ve got wet spots when you come out of the shower.
“Some sort of texture or pattern on the floor, I really love to do because it actually means you don’t feel like you have to clean it every time you walk in.”
