Embodying the coastal charm of the coveted Beaumaris enclave, the story of Hacienda is as uplifting as the serene bay views it commands.

For 15 years it has been the cherished family home of Dave Franklin, an award-winning landscape architect and a familiar face in 12 seasons of The Block.

Fresh from a previous home renovation and hungry for a new project, in 2007 the Franklin Landscape and Design director and his wife Jane stumbled upon what was originally an unassuming relic of the ’60s.

The couple were captivated by its panoramic views and intrinsic character.

“It was a clay brick house with a concrete slab balcony that had white wrought iron,” Franklin says gleefully.

“While it stood firm with its solid walls, it was begging for transformation, and our minds immediately envisioned its many possibilities.”

Emerging from its humble beginnings as a two-bedroom abode, the home metamorphosed under the Franklins’ touch into a sprawling four-bedroom sanctuary.

Renowned for embracing ambitious projects, Franklin ensured the place was given an architectural rebirth.

“When I say we tackled a full renovation, I mean it’s like a brand-new house, from the in-depth refurbishment to the sparkling new pool and spa with glass mosaic tiles,” says the renowned pool expert.

“Inside are ceilings that stretch six metres high, adorned with timber and illuminated by 14 Velux skylights, and an upstairs outdoor spa, offering sublime bay vistas.”

While luxurious elements are abundant – from expansive entertainment zones and a chic Miele kitchen to the custom-fitted wine cellar and bespoke joinery – Franklin insists that the home’s true essence lies in the family memories woven within.

“This home is more than its impeccable build and high-end finishes,” he says. “It’s where our kids, Summer and Tex, transitioned from toddlers to teens, echoing with joy from poolside summers, birthday celebrations and barbecue banter.

“Jane’s creative touch is displayed throughout, with each room decorated with mementos collected from our previous travels.”

Beyond its walls, Franklin says the allure of  Beaumaris and the vibrant community in its northern neighbour of Black Rock deepened their sense of belonging.

With serene beaches a stone’s throw away and trendy spots around, life wasn’t just lived, it was savoured.

“No matter which route you come home, you’re always greeted with glimpses of the bay,” Franklin says, fondly.

“We’re surrounded by great shops and trendy restaurants and, with the beach so close, summers are nothing short of idyllic.”

Yet for visionaries like the Franklins, the conclusion of one creative journey heralds the onset of the next. Thus, with Hacienda completed, their sights have inevitably turned to the allure of a new challenge.

“We’re excited for a fresh start and to see potential where others might not,” Franklin says. “Parting with our home tugs at our hearts, and, though bittersweet, we feel the timing is just right.”
