Up on Forrest Hill with a sparkling view across the city, this penthouse makes all who come here feel on top of the world. It’s not just the height, it’s the light.

A luxurious abode of about 344 square metres, the 2013-built apartment has full-length double glazing that opens to a travertine wraparound terrace.

Open-plan living and dining, a lounge and three double bedrooms with en suites will tempt families and downsizers alike.

If Coco Chanel were here, she’d declare it “magnifique”.

The great couturier inspired the design of this fascinating building, which has just three whole-of-floor dwellings. So did her compatriot Pierre Chareau, who designed France’s first glass and steel house in 1928.

Asked to make something unique for this hillside spot in a court, the architects at Demaine Partnership looked to early 20th-century French design.

The deep colonnades of southern French style link indoors and out while providing privacy. Inside, the architects went for “a sharp definition of forms and edges”. However, there’s no snooty hauteur about it.

Pale oak flooring (from the Netherlands), polished timber panelling and travertine bathrooms give the interior a golden glow even as winter closes in. From the secure foyer (or the basement garage), take the lift to the top.

The L-shaped hall opens left into the main bedroom (with walk-in wardrobe), which commands the terrace’s wide southern end.

The twin en suite has a Victoria & Albert free-standing bath and a glass shower. Two further bedrooms have wardrobes and shower en suites. Bookworms will enjoy the central sitting room, which has a desk, bookcases and french doors to the terrace.

In the Calacatta marble kitchen, Miele twin ovens, a steam oven and a microwave look sharp amid white and oak-veneer cabinetry.

The integrated fridge is complemented by a Vintec wine fridge. There’s a butler’s pantry for prep. So far, so chic, but the hero is the enormous, oak-floored living and dining area, warmed by a gas fire.

If you must take it outside, there’s no sweeter spot on a summer night than the northerly terrace, with its uninterrupted view.
