There was no easing into the biggest Block ever for the new teams with a 48-hour House Decider challenge to complete.

Tom and Sarah-Jane were given House 1 for the challenge because they were the first of the new teams to arrive on site for the Tree Change season.

After debating over white and green paint colours, wasting time priming a newly plastered wall before it had been sanded and struggling with a spray paint gun, the couple managed to complete their bedroom.

The judges were impressed with the very first room they walked into on The Block 2022.

“Wow,” Shaynna said when she entered the room.

Neale was also blown away and looked around in awe to take everything in. “My goodness,” he said.

The use of green, white and terracotta got the thumbs up from Shaynna. “This inspiration for the colour palette, it’s stunning – I think it’s perfection,” she said.

Darren thought Tom and Sarah-Jane had nailed the country style brief.

“In terms of creating a room that feels like it belongs in this house, it’s got a traditional feeling but it feels very contemporary…” he explained. “I mean that’s not easy to do but they’ve got it really right.”

The wainscotting on the wall behind the bed was a hit with Darren. “I love how it elongates the height [of the room],” he said.

The original ceiling rose caught Shaynna’s attention. “That is so original, it is beautiful,” Shaynna said.

The ceiling rose was complemented by a gorgeous pendant light that threw patterned shadows across the room.

“This room to me reads like a room that really knows what it is. This couple have come in here, I think, knowing damn well what they wanted to do,” Neale said.

Shaynna thought the space felt like a boutique hotel room.

In a Block first, Neale loved what he saw so much he wanted some of the features for his own home.

“That’s never happened in a challenge room before. I’m looking at those brass sconces, I’m looking at that panelling, I’m looking at that colour – beautiful,” he admitted.

Darren was a fan of the lighting too. “Those sconces are heaven. They’re so beautiful, such a lovely colour choice and I love how the brass throws that green [colour] against the olive [painted wall]. It’s quite nuts but it’s really perfect,” he said.

After so much positive feedback, Tom and Sarah-Jane were expecting a ‘but’ and unfortunately there was one, albeit a very tiny one.

Neale didn’t think the artwork was right for the room. “This is the only bum-note for me in the whole room because I really dislike it,” he said.

Shaynna and Darren disagreed and said they loved the painting, so Neale explained his reasoning. “For me that totally jars with the sophistication I’m seeing elsewhere in the room. I don’t like this at all,” he added.

“If I was giving them one word of advice I’d say go bigger with something here,” he said gesturing to the space around the painting.

Overall the room was a hit with the judges and showed Tom and Sarah-Jane will be ones to watch in the weeks ahead.
