Tom and Sarah-Jane's rookie painting error on The Block leaves the crew in hysterics

The Block‘s Tom and Sarah-Jane couldn’t have been happier with their quick progress during the House Decider challenge in Episode 1.

But the Melbourne-based married couple soon learned the hard way that being so proactive late at night doesn’t always pay off.

After boasting that their plasterers had done “such a good job” on their bedroom walls, the pair decided to top them off with a coat of primer to stay ahead of the game.

“Our plasterers have gone bananas. They have Gyprocked everything, and top-coated everything ready for sanding tomorrow morning. I’m feeling really good,” Tom told the camera proudly.

“I said to Sarah-Jane, ‘Put the heater on, let’s get a coat of primer on it, seal the plaster…'”

But as they later learned, that shouldn’t have been done until the Gyprock – a building material used for making the surfaces of interior walls – was sanded.

We then saw a flashback from that fateful evening, with Tom telling his wife: “I don’t have to be neat now, I can just slap it on.

“That’s all getting sanded off tomorrow anyway!”

“Yep. Last night, he painted unsanded Gyprock,” host Scott Cam said over the top of the footage in disbelief.

After waking up the next day, the couple were met with a crew of tradies who were quite amused over what had happened.

Sarah recalled: “The Gyprockers walk in and are like, ‘What have you done to the walls? You don’t put primer on – sealer, primer, paint – until the Gyprock has been sanded.'”

“It’s like putting your undies over the top of your pants. You’ve done it the wrong way round,” one tradie said, causing himself and Sarah-Jane to burst out into laughter.

Despite their best efforts of trying to get ahead in the competition, the couple were told they would have to re-do the entire wall.

“I had to go and hand sand with the handheld machine, every single bit of plaster sealer off…” Tom said.

“So yeah. It’s heaps of fun in House 1!” Sarah-Jane laughed.

Time will tell if the duo manage to pull off their desired look in time.
