At-home hair salons are now more popular in prestige homes than cinemas, says Michael Pallier, managing director of Sydney Sotheby’s. The reason? Privacy and convenience.
“Celebrity and high-profile clients pay a premium for a call-out service at home,” says Anthony Talbot of Anthony Talbot London salons.
“But the benefits are that no one recognises them, and they can jump straight into a Rolls-Royce looking fabulous for an event such as the ARIAs.”
Leading interior designer Thomas Hamel agrees: “If there is torrential rain, there is no risk of a blow-dry being ruined. Ditto, no more going outside to your car after a pedicure wearing salon thongs on a winter’s day.”
Talbot says his stylists have attended to cashed-up clients in Mosman, Darling Point and The Spit, where they prefer to enjoy home comforts such as magnificent harbour views during their hair appointments.
Home salons should be every bit as stylish and inviting as the world’s top hair and beauty salons, Hamel says.
“This is ‘me time’, so the space should make a person feel good,” he says. “Think natural light, plenty of mirrors, pleasing colours, beautiful fabrics, comfortable seats and, if there is room, a shampoo basin with a reclining lounge.”
Lighting is important, both natural, so the salon is a pleasing place to be, and artificial, to ensure a beauty practitioner can do their best work, Hamel says.
“Floors should be hardwood and easy to sweep and clean after a haircut, while soft furnishings should be comfortable yet durable and, if needed, water resistant,” he says.
He adds that the best location for a home salon is on the main floor, where it can be easily accessed.
“This makes it easy for a hairdresser or beautician to enter the space without having to go through areas where other family members may want their privacy.
“It’s also popular to have the salon accessible off a basement or garage so that there is a separate entrance for the technicians. One very busy executive loves this position as her children can say goodbye on their way to school.”
Talbot says that while stylists will bring most hair necessities in their kit, stocking home salons with quality products from brands such as GHD, Kerastase and Aveda adds the final luxury touch.
