The cost of living in Perth is currently higher than Sydney and it’s one of the priciest cities in the world, according to Numbeo.

However, some suburbs offer affordable accommodation with convenient access to Perth’s major universities including the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, Murdoch University and Notre Dame. And here they are.

Bibra Lake

Bibra Lake offers a slightly industrial lifestyle just a stone’s throw from Murdoch University. Despite the vaguely industrial feel, there is plenty to see and do. You can enjoy local attractions such as the ice rink and Adventure World, a great way to cool down in the hot Perth climate. A one-bedroom apartment here starts from around $320 per week.

Bentley

It you want to be within walking distance to your early morning classes at Curtin University look no further than Bentley. This suburb is filled with Curtin students so you’ll be close to all the action.

There aren’t many apartment blocks in the area. It mainly has three or four bedroom houses so it’s the perfect place to have a share house with a group of friends. Study sessions will be in full force in the lounge room during exam period! A three-bedroom house here will cost around $400 per week.

Mount Claremont

Located on the other side of the Swan River is Mount Claremont, which, given its close proximity to the University of WA, is ideal for uni students.

With houses and townhouses aplenty, it’s a great option if you’re looking to share. Check out St Peters Square and Zamia Gardens for newer developments. Prices start from around $700 per week for a simple three-bedroom residence.

While Perth can be expensive, consider sharing accommodation to help manage the general cost of living. With so many options, from the lake, to the beaches and to the city itself, there is something in Perth for everyone.
