The “Tedwardian” house by Wowowa Architecture, named for the film, Ted, that the client was working on at the time, is a playful interpretation of classic Edwardian design.

The rear extension added to an Elsternwick home is inspired by the surprisingly geometric language of the existing house.

Various textures, lightweight timber panelling and a similar hierarchy of ornamentation mirror the original home.

“We are so used to seeing [Edwardians] that we forget to look at their detailing – we take them for granted,” says Wowowa director Monique Woodward.

“It’s a nice reminder that contemporary architecture can be playful and not restrict everything to a boring box on the back.”

In the main bedroom and en suite green paint and tiles reflective of Australian eucalyptus serve as a contemporary nod to the wallpaper styles popularised during Edwardian times.

Vibrant use of colour is prevalent in most of Wowowa’s projects.

“Strong bold colours are extremely satisfying and, despite popular opinion, can actually make spaces feel larger and definitely more intimate and glorious.

“We love choosing materials that are inherently colourful and textural like bricks, carpets and tiles – something robust to create the architecture.”
