16/1 Thirlmere Road, Mount Lawley, keeps its impressive facade but offers mod cons inside.

For the romantically-inclined buyer, or someone who is fond of medieval castles but isn’t up for buying one in Europe, what does Australia have to offer?

Plenty, as it turns out. If you’ve been tempted by the area of your own castle or something in a similar style, this is what is on the market at the moment.

Located on the outskirts of Brisbane, this two-storey, four-bedroom home comes with some modern accoutrements, such as solar panels, air-conditioning, a gas cook top and a concealed colorbond roof.

It sits on a 4151 square metres and is also adjacent to a park and creek – so plenty of room for your medieval progeny, should you need it.

Dubbed “The Castle”, this $2.6 million Phillip Island property is set up to provide luxury accommodation, with a restaurant attached and a separate, private living area.

The owners are retiring so the full estate – including an artists’ studio and wine cellar – is on the market. It’s also a very short walk to the water.

A decidedly more modern take on the castle theme, this four-bedroom, two-bathroom home is regally placed on 1225 square metres, around 20 minutes drive from the centre of Cairns.

The listing describes it as a “fairytale castle” and invites interested parties to “open the gate and walk up the red brick path to discover your very own fantasy kingdom”, which sounds a lot more fun then queueing up with 100 other angry Sydneysiders to view an inner-west shoebox on a Saturday. It’s probably more affordable as well, priced at offers over $680,000.

On the outskirts of Sydney and at the foot of the Blue Mountains, Groningen Castle was build in 1998 on just over five hectares of land.

The listing describes it as “crafted to emulate historical Norwegian architecture”, and the property features an entrance hall, high ceilings, a feature fireplace, big kitchen, sandstone, stained glass and gardens.

And electric gates, which could be argued is the modern version of a moat.

Described as “solidly constructed”, this more rectangular nod to the middle ages is well-positioned five minutes drive from Hobart city centre with views aplenty.

It’s big, too, with four bedrooms on a 735 square block. And if that’s not enough – or you’d prefer it to be your sometimes house – the sellers also own the property next door, and they’re happy to negotiate to sell both.

On a whopping 14.5 hectares near Ballarat, this is more in the spirit of the Middle Ages rather than an exact replica. That said, the listing does describe it as “right out of a medieval storybook” and “a unique dwelling with medieval mystic and out of this world views”.

There’s a lot to feast your eyes on, inside and out – the interior photos feature swords, suits of armour, stuffed big cats, mounted shields and animal heads and chandeliers.

And outside the views include Kryal Castle, a medieval-themed tourist and entertainment venue, also recently up for sale

If you don’t want the hassle of cleaning a moat or clipping your hedges in the likeness of a griffin, this apartment in Bell Castle in Mt Lawley, might be more your speed.

With stone walls and high ceilings, the property keeps its impressive facade but offers mod cons inside, as well being very conveniently positioned.

The building was constructed in 1914 for Albany Bell Pty Ltd, a catering company, and has been recently turned into apartments.

Just under three hours drive from Brisbane, this four bedroom Kingaroy home has grounds – a garden that has fruit trees, a vegie garden, aviaries, chooks and a green house.

Inside you’ve got the traditional medieval trappings, including what looks like an entire stuffed deer perched near the dining table. And if you want to extend, the block next door is for sale as well.

This is for those who don’t just want any regular house with a bit of a turret.

The 1891 gothic sandstone home has everything a self-declared monarch could want – six bedrooms, bay windows, cornices and plaster roses, hand-carved timber, a billiard room, a bar, self-water garden and a big, kingly spa.

Located smack bang in the middle of Adelaide, it’s opposite Victoria Park.

Also sitting up the top end of the market, Sandcastles at City Beach, WA is apparently negotiating offers now – but still, it’s nice enough to have a look.

Six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a stone’s throw to the ocean, it was designed by James Shaw from Ecotect Architects, has room for caretakers, a maid – or the inlaws – and a lift.
