Abandoned house in Tasmania’s rugged west listed for $150,000

January 14, 2025

A five-bedroom house abandoned for 20 years is back on the market under mysterious circumstances.

Little is known about the property, which was initially built in the early 1900s, says listing agent Rodney Triffett of Harcourts West Coast.

It’s unclear why the house is finally up for sale. Triffett says the family who owns the property asked him to sell it.

The vendors are keeping the reason it has been vacant for so long or why it has been sold now private.

“ I remember this property being empty when I was in my younger days in Queenstown, but it’s just good to see it on the market so someone can kind of pick it up and move it on from there,” he says.

This Queenstown property is currently unlivable, as the inside of the house is infested with mould and has water damage.

“It kind of needs to be all stripped back and redone, including structure work,” says Triffett.

“There’s a lot of water that’s getting in through the home in some areas. It’s pretty much surrounded by tall trees, which need to be cleared out to help get a bit of light onto the house as well.

“It’s not a small job by any means.”

The property sits on approximately 2,759 square metres of land and has an asking price of $150,000 or more.

“This property is being sold “as-is, where-is,” with no warranties or representations made by the seller,” says the listing description.

“Although it has been vacant for many years, it offers a unique opportunity for those with a vision for restoration and a passion for bringing history back to life.”
