Actor and director Ben Affleck has clearly had some success with good house hunting recently, with the purchase of a new LA compound close to his ex-wife and children.

Now the Oscar winner is selling his holiday home – a beautiful old mansion with river views – in an exclusive Georgia enclave of Hampton Island for $US8.9 million ($11.6 million)

The 35-hectare property hosts three buildings, with the main structure a 557-square-metre home built in the style of a southern antebellum Greek Revival Plantation manor.

There’s also a summer cottage for entertaining, with an enormous fireplace and deck, and a five-bedroom ‘Oyster House’, a 929-square-metre guest house featuring salvaged maritime bunk beds, exposed beams and a wrap-around balcony.

According to Variety magazine, visitors to Hampton Island are only allowed across the bridge to the prestigious pocket with permission of an island resident.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Affleck paid $US7.11 million for the property in 2003, back when he was dating singer Jennifer Lopez.

His latest purchase, a 1194-square-metre Los Angeles mansion, comes with a wood-panelled library with a wet bar, climate-controlled wine cellar, gym and a screening room for 12.

Affleck had previously been sharing a New York rental property with his girlfriend, TV producer Lindsay Shookus.

He and his former wife, actress Jennifer Garner, listed their clifftop estate which was also in the Pacific Palisades neighbourhood for around $US45 million in 2015.

The couple announced their separation that year, and officially filed for divorce in April 2017.

Having starred as comic-book hero Batman in the recent DC universe films Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, Affleck has recently finished filming a new movie, Triple Frontier.
