A sprawling estate in Melbourne’s Sandringham owned by actor Lisa McCune sold under the hammer for $5.25 million on Saturday.

The property at 54-56 Bamfield Street, Sandringham consists of a main five-bedroom house with a separate two-bedroom cottage at the rear.

Known as “Buxton”, the property was built around 1913 and sits on a large 1321-square-metre site.

Owned by McCune with former husband Tim Disney as tenants in common, according to public records, it was on the market for the first time in more than a decade.

It is understood that the former Blue Heelers star plans to relocate to a nearby home in Sandringham.

It was one of 450 auctions scheduled in Melbourne on Saturday.

Three bidders, including the winning couple, who were represented by buyer’s advocate Jarrod McCabe of Wakelin Property Advisory, fought it out for the keys. The home was listed with Hodges Real Estate Brighton’s Campbell Cooney and Greg Downes.

Bidding opened at $4.4 million and moved in increments of between $100,000 and $5000.

Mr Cooney said the decision to sell the property via auction came at the last minute, following buyer feedback seeking greater transparency.

“This had started off as an expressions of interest campaign due to the stage four lockdown but, at the end, the buyers were unsure about that process,” he said.

“We spoke to them and decided we’d convert it to an auction.”

Mr Cooney said it was unlikely the property would have fetched the same result if Melbourne’s strict lockdown measures hadn’t been eased.

“It’s about the confidence and now it’s turned from buyers saying, ‘We’ll wait, because things might get worse,’ to [saying] ‘Uh oh, maybe I should buy because there’s some improvement’,” Mr Cooney said.

Mr Cooney would not disclose the reserve price for the property but described the vendors as “sellers who would have sold within the range,” which was quoted at between $4.6 million to $4.8 million.

The buyers were a family with young children moving from another Sandringham residence, Mr McCabe said.

They were attracted to the property’s scale and had been searching for some time.

“The land size was the key component for my clients. We’ve been looking for a long time, so a large block and period-style house were key components for what we’ve been looking for,” he said.

“Blocks of this size don’t come up very often in Sandringham.”

McCune has won 10 Logie Awards including four Gold Logies and is also known for her screen roles in Sea Patrol and How to Stay Married, and stage performances in The King and I and South Pacific.
