AFL star Jeremy Finlayson and his wife Kellie are selling their family home as Kellie continues her cancer fight.
The couple have listed their Adelaide house for auction. Her health, with surgery looming, and to be closer to where she is receiving treatment has compelled the pair to sell their sweet, restored character property in Hendon.
Kellie has battled bowel and now lung cancer for three years and candidly shares her experiences with her supporters, to raise detection awareness.
Ray White North Adelaide principal Rachel Lawrie is looking after the sale for the injured Port Adelaide forward and his wife, who are parents to young daughter Sophia.
The auction is scheduled for September 24 and will be on-site at the Vickers Street house and online at 5.30pm.
Ceiling roses, leadlight windows, ornate fireplaces and banks of polished floorboards have been lovingly enhanced and retained by the couple, in a plum location between the beach and the city.
“Due to Kellie’s ongoing health battles, and need for constant support for family members right now, the pair have made the tough decision to let go of their first home to cater to the revolving door of helpers necessary to keep their worlds moving forward,” Ray White agency said in a statement.
Kellie was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021, just months after giving birth to Sophia. Her treatment is ongoing and while endeavouring with her own health, has become a prominent advocate for bowel cancer testing among young Australians. The disease moved to her lungs and is aiming for surgery in December.
“We’ve moved just around the corner, closer to my treatment and the beach which will hopefully mean I can spend more time in my happy place when I have the energy to do so. And means our daughter Sophia can grow up next to the beach like her mum did, which is pretty special,” Kellie said in a statement through Ray White.
“In terms of what’s next, I’m currently undergoing chemotherapy to hopefully shrink the mets in my lungs and enable me to have a surgery in December which will be one of my hardest recoveries over the last almost three years. Crazy!”
The property is treasured by the couple. Kellie’s beloved part of the house is the elegant and tranquil living room, but for her husband, its the ample space and the shed.
The buyer’s favourite aspect could just be the family’s lovely neighbours.
The house is ready to move into but has renovation potential, should a buyer want to make their own mark. This was something the pair had hoped to embark on, but Kellie’s health is their number one focus.
“It’s so dainty and beautiful but with a lick of paint is also as modern as you’d need or like. I’d say Jeremy’s favourite is the land size and the size of the shed, which he was able to turn into a man cave for the past couple years, typical bloke,” Kellie said.
“I wish we had the ability to do this ourselves but unfortunately my health is our priority at the moment. And our neighbours are god’s gift, they’re honestly the best humans you can ever live next door to and we will miss them everyday.
“In terms of health. Everyone knows that I’m on the hard stuff again, still doing all of the things to encourage a long and beautiful life while also living the best life I’m able. And in terms of Jezz, he’s finished for the season so needs a stable space to focus on his pre-season and come back next year at his very best.
“With the help of our families looking after me and Soph, we believe he’ll be able to focus a lot more on himself and have his best season yet.”
Lawrie said demand is anticipated due to the area’s price point and proximity to the best of Adelaide. A renovation or extension, with a tick from council, is an option for the new owner.
“It’s got original characteristics, plus a large backyard and good sized garage,” Lawrie said. “Hendon is a suburb on the rise due to its affordability and being centrally located to the city and beach.”
Finlayson has not played since July, after a laceration spleen prematurely ended his 2024 season.
