It’s one of those times of the year. It’s raining and it’s cold, and headlines are blaring bleak and dark news.
Sometimes, when the world gets too much, I lose myself in houses. Granted, it’s an occupational hazard – one of the highlights of the job is that the team and I get to see the inside and outside of so many incredible homes.
So on those days when the world feels too loud, this is where we go: down the rabbit hole of beautiful and incredible houses that soothe like a big warm mug of Milo. Come along with us.
The most perfect shack in the most perfect place
I was born in Tassie and one of my favourite places to go during my childhood was Coles Bay. In fact it still is one of the most special places in the world to me.
This “shack” at 428 Freycinet Drive, as Tasmanians call their holiday houses, is nestled within Freycinet National Park. I mean, come on? Talk about location, location, location.
I can already see myself sending the children off on their bikes to go to the oyster hut two kilometres away, buying the freshly shucked oysters and bringing them back to me on that heavenly deck.
A breakfast nook to beat all others
I go weak at the knees for a built-in banquette. I don’t know what it is; thoughtfulness, the clever utilisation of space, the chance to use fabulous fabric in an understated way?
Whatever the reason, this divine nook at East Crescent Street at McMahons Point would be the most perfect and beautiful place to have breakfast each morning.
The most richly layered house that I can’t stop looking at
I could stare at this house, that was owned and decorated by Simone Haag, for hours.
Actually, I have done as such. Hours (maybe days?) just looking and bending my mind around the exquisite styling and curation of Simone’s home.
And the fact the property at Poynton Avenue is tucked into the sleepy and leafy suburb of Ringwood in Melbourne makes it all the better.
The most seductively sexy house
Oh this house… if I had all the money in the world I would think about buying this house for the finishings and fittings alone. I cannot stop swooning over that floating brass suspension lamp by Paola Navone.
The dramatic cliffs of Dover Heights are a stone’s throw away, but the house at Liverpool Street itself is a total showstopper – oozing in curves and marble and most beautiful timber.
The best house for hide and seek
I love houses that you can get lost in. Where there are doors and nooks and all sorts of quirks from a different era.
This stunning Federation house at Seaview Street in Summer Hill is such a beautiful family home.
I love the way you can feel it creaking with character and the gorgeous old-fashioned garden, as well as the detailed and original stained glass windows. There’s nothing like a great outlook in a space that appears to be filled with love and light.
A real-life history lesson
This house at Wards Lane Kyneton was a steam-driven flour mill in the 1850s.
Today it exists as a huge six-bedroom home set over four floors, with vast grounds and acres of space for horses and dogs and all the room in the world to create a new story.
Old meets new
This house at Hampden Road in Armadale is everything. It is completely juxtaposed – old and stately on the outside but warm and playful and cheeky on the inside.
I am mad for houses that mash up old and new, and this one just keeps me looking at it over and over again. The use of colour and whimsical design is sublime.
Lush, green, serene
From the road, you might not even know this house is tucked into the Tweed Coast hinterland. But once you see it, it dazzles.
It’s no shrinking violet, a med-style house nestled in amongst the rainforest at Nunderi.
A house in Byron
No dream house list would be complete without a place in Byron Bay.
This meticulously constructed house at Brandon Street layers all the best elements of design – beautiful woodwork, lush and tranquil gardens, amazing and detailed stone work and a whopping great pool.
The architectural marvel
I mean, sometimes you just need to let your imagination run wild… what a house, what a location and what a vision.
This place at Cowra Place in Cronulla has to be seen to be believed.
The house that makes you want to live in Adelaide
Dreaming of a tree change? I always am. If that view is not perfection, then I don’t know what is.
Set on masses of land, with views of rolling green hills for days and days, this beautiful home at Taylors Hill Road in Willunga could be used in an South Australian tourism campaign.
And to boot, it’s just a short drive to the world-class vineyards of McLaren Vale.
